This weekend was our village’s 150th show, and the whole place was buzzing. On Friday night when I took our exhibits to the marquee (the children entered a few categories too), it was raining and the field was beginning to get muddy, but there was still an air of excitement. Houses around the village were festooned with bunting and roads that are usually fairly quiet suddenly became far busier.
The weather was not kind, and the field resembled something you might see at a festival. In previous years it’s been bone dry, but it was definitely welly weather this time! We all traipsed to the show this morning, my niece included. (Truth be told I could have done with matchsticks for my eyes as a 3 year old, 5 year old and 6 year old sharing a room does not equal a calm bedtime, and they were up at the crack of dawn!) Anyway, a picnic, rain coats and pocket money were all packed into rucksacks and off we went, once I’d triple checked we had the tickets.
We went to the exhibition marquee first to see how we had done. I’d entered 7 items, 3 crochet, 2 knitting and 2 cards. None of my yarn crafts placed, but there really were some beautiful things there. However, I got a pretty big surprise at the cardmaking table when I saw that my card had come first! We went to look at the childrens’ items (these are very heavily contested categories, they get loads of entries!) and they hadn’t won either. Sadly, my son’s decorated egg had lost some of the things he’d stuck on in the heat of the marquee. Not to worry, we went off into the mud to explore various parts of the show.
The children went on a giant bouncy castle slide, which they all enjoyed, and we explored the heritage area where there were a lot of people dressed in costumes from various periods in history. We also looked around the old tractors and had a brief look at various stands before trying to find a picnic spot (easier said than done when you’ve forgotten the picnic blanket!)
Once we’d had lunch we went to watch some of the showjumping in the main arena. By this point my 3 year old was a little grumpy about being so muddy, and complained her legs were tired. We decided not to push our luck and headed for home. As we went past the marquee I popped in to take a photo of my winning card and discovered that my other card had got 2nd place! I couldn’t believe it! How I missed it I’ve no idea, though the table was a bit untidy so I thought the 2nd place card was with another item. Here are my winning entries:
The purple card was one I did for a tutorial post, but I jazzed it up by fussy cutting a butterfly from another piece of the same paper and only glueing the middle of the body to give the wings dimension. The first prize card was made last year after I dreamed about it when I got a hexagon cutting die set!
It was a busy day, and the children were really tired. As is customary at these events, we had a go on the tombola stall and my daughter won this:
She was thrilled to bits with her festive hand towel, and is insisting that it comes camping with us!
We all had a good time, and tomorrow I have the satisfying job of whacking the wellies together to get the mud off (please tell me I’m not alone in finding joy in this job!) We are lucky to have such a nice show so local to us, and I’m super pleased with my winnings from the craft show too.
Well done on your win love that card so clever! βΊοΈ

Yay! Congratulations on your beautiful cards winning first and second prizes… They’re cool. I’m glad it was fun despite the weather. I’d love to see a picture of your daughter’s white towel when it returns from camping! I remember having a Holly leaf skirt that I wanted to wear in the summer!

Thank you, I imagine the towel will either suffer badly from dirt or be so treasured it never leaves her bed!

Congratulations on your wins! And your daughter’s prize towel is beautiful; hopefully when you take the towel camping next, the field won’t be muddy as we all know that white things attract dirt! π

Congratulations on both a first and a second in the card section. Two very different cards, one pretty and one fun, but both lovely in their own way. I must admit to liking the Nutty one best, just because its so different.

Oh…and I would love to knock mud off the wellies π It just sounds like it would be very satisfying (and maybe a bit therapeutic after a weekend with 3 little ones!?) π

Thank you, glad I’m not alone with the welly thing! Patience is a virtue, I need the mud to be nice and dry so it comes off. π

Well done on first and second prize with your cards.. Wonderful loved them both.. And yes the Rain has created some muddy fields and not nice for these events.. I see Bakewell Show in Derbyshire was having a tough time of it too this week.
And taking part is what counts, and your daughters little prize very festive. π

Congratulations! First AND second is impressive!
I also enjoy whacking wellies to get rid of the mud. We did some welly wanging at camp, which is possibly the only other way to have fun with wellies. I came second in that :p
